![]() ![]() The primary reason to use Hyper-v is the license advantage if you will be running a lot of Windows servers. However, it is still very heavy and has a lot of overhead. It used to be MUCH weaker, but has improved quite a bit lately and I expect it to swap places with Xen at some point. Hyper-V is technically the weakest of the bunch. (Virtualbox is desktop so I am skipping it) KVM is the basis for Proxmox, Openstack, Scale Computing, and more. There are really only 4 hypervisors ESXi, Xen, Hyper-v and KVM. This is just to let you know where my opinion comes from. And do a lot of transfers from one to another after company acquisitions. I consult on the major hypervisors for a living. Is Proxmox or Hyper-V better? in gerneral? in what usecases? why?Īs for me: at the moment i'm planning on hosting nextcloud, vaultwarden, pihole, homeassistant and maybe a xmpp server on it. So: if you had the free choice, cost is no factor (since i already have the license): Now, by far the biggest reason i see Proxmox being promoted is that Hyper-V costs while Proxmox is free. OR i could go with Proxmox which everyone seems to recommend. ![]() I could continue to use my windows 10 pro version together with WSL 2 and hyper-v i am planning to use a hypervisor because i'm aware that while docker brings creat possibilities with it it also isn't quite as secure, especially when i download rather unknown containers. I am looking to convert my old PC into a server because the pi is hitting its limits. i currently don't use hyperv however but a raspberry pi 4 with raspbian. thanks to this license and hyperv i got into selfhosting and am here today. I currently have a Windows 10 pro license. ![]()
